Library Skills at MIT - New Guide

Finding Information

Literature Searching

This section of the module will show you how to effectively find good high quality information. It will do this by first helping you devise a search strategy by refining your search terms. It will then show you how to effectively find different sources of information, focusing on books, journal articles and conference papers.

At the end of this section, you will be able to:

  • Convert a topic or scenario into a searchable question.
  • Identify key words, synonyms and related terms.
  • Use boolean to combine your terms.
  • Use the search strategy you have developed to search the library catalogue and databases.
