Chatbot apps, or Text Generation apps produce text responses to text prompts from the user. Some of these apps now respond to visual prompts. They can be used for content generation, translation and text summarisation, or to simulate human chat boxes, amongst other things. Some Chatbot apps will program code, for instance Python or HTML.
ChatGPT
ChatGPT is a natural language chat bot that allows text entered questions to be answered and text created to assist with such actions as composing emails, writing essays, and writing programming code. The program will respond to human like response to questions, and the user can refine the answer so that it is a desired length, stule, format, length or language
OpenAI created Chatgpt. The service works like a search engine, with a simple field that you can enter queries in which it will then answer to.

Gemini (Previously called Bard)
This is a natural language search engine, except that it combines Google search into a conversational bot. Bard will respond to images as well as text prompts, so you can upload an image and ask a question about it. It combines AI with the standard Google search facility to give you an answer.
Gemini does provide some integration with Google apps.

Google’s BERT
Google’s BERT (Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers) is an Gen AI language model that Google applies to its search results. It analyses search terms entered into Google in order to retrieve more relevant results for the searcher, by understanding what the searcher actually wants to retrieve.

Use a simple google like search field, to answers questions, chat with users and write text outlines and other text content based on prompts. This app can write business and entertainment material. It can also scan and capture text from photos taken by users.

Perplexity
Searches the internet in real time, so it has recent information in its responses, and can provide commentary on recent events. It has a range of different functions, including text, images, translation, and the ability to summarize PDFs.
It provides source citations in its response, thus enhancing credibility - providing direct citations to the sources used to formulate its responses, something that not many AI text based applications do.
It has a good paid version, as well as a pro paid version with more functions.
Perplexity
Claude 3.
Has an impressive memory, it can remember previous chat requests and build on them to do further requests. You can also connect it to other applications to incorporate it into workflows. Claude 3 has been recognised as being better than ChatGPT in some areas (see this article for a detailed comparison) It has been incorporated into the duck duck go search engine. It also accepts visial images as prompts and can interpret and provide analysis of them. Claude is made by the Anthropic company, which is a public benefit corporation. It has daily limits on use for the free account.
Claude
