Using Generative Artificial Intelligence (Gen AI) at MIT

This guide aims to provide guidance for students about using gen AI as part of their studies, as well as general information on Generative AI applications for students and staff, including providing options for various functions.

AI Grammar/Writing Aid Apps

Grammar/Writing aids will examine writing text and not only check it for errors, but will use Gen AI to suggest re-written sentences, sections or paragraphs. They may re-write it in a different style, or a suggested improved style. They may examine things like sentence length, verb choice, verb tense, international spelling options, spelling and other things.

Grammarly

This application has been around for some time, and is a mainstream product used for spelling and grammar checking, often by students or business people. However recently, it has added Gen AI functionality which enables it to re-write text for authors.

Wordtune
Wordtune is an alternative to Grammarly and will use Gen AI to re-write sentences to improve them and offers synonym choices.

Pro Writing Aid
Pro Writing Aid is a writing aid, more used by writers, and is accessed through a subscription. It is one of the more popular writing aid applications. The application uses Gen AI to re-write sections and paragraphs for writers, for instance, it will commonly offer to re-write a paragraph with active verbs rather than passive verbs and give the writer various options.
It provides complete analysis of a document, analysing it to provide scores on things like grammar, spelling, style and other factors for optimisation.
